Laura Woodside
I was born in Prince Edward Island, Canada. Yes, that tiny little island on the east coast that you can just barely make out on most maps. While I spent many of my teenage years growing up in Alberta, PEI is where I eventually called home once more.
Here I reside in my little house with my two cats, Pippin and Stark, my chinchilla, Kimber and my blue tongued skink, Hiccup. And because my pets are my world, of course I’m going to leave their pictures here for you to admire!
My Story
I grew up reading and writing; I always had a book or a pencil in my hand. It only made sense as I grew up that I’d want to become an author.
I’ve always been an avid fantasy reader. Some of the series that had me hooked were Redwall by Brian Jaques, Harry Potter by JK Rowling, the Dragonlance Series (by various authors), and the House of Night by PC and Kristen Cast.
I finished writing my first book when I was 21 (which has yet to see the light of day). Once it was done, I felt so motivated. If I could complete one book, why couldn’t I do more?
Inspiration
My inspiration has come from all manner of things: movies, dreams, other stories, songs, etc. There isn’t just one font of inspiration; it comes from from everywhere if only we’re open to it.
No One-Size Fits Process
I’ve been a pantser. I’ve been a plotter. I’ve hand written my first draft, and I’ve done it all digitally. Everything I work on has a different process that feels right to the project.
Fantasy, but…
Fantasy is such a broad term, which is why I like to use it to describe my work. Just like my process, my stories don’t always fit into the same categories. I love fairy tales and thrillers and high fantasy. I love it all. My books may all be fantasy based, but their sub-genres vary.
